About Maybe
Maybe is Tonya Dean, a Black nonbinary artist in Seattle.
Maybe has developed their style by creating themes from different areas of study that explode into abstract psychedelic pieces. Maybe draws inspiration from a broad background of dance, music, science, pop culture, different hobbies, and the strangeness of daily life. They are also part of Team Context, an art production group.
Maybe is a mixed-media artist, painting and drawing with graphite, pen, inks, watercolor, gouache, and acrylic. They try a little bit of everything; live-painting, art markets, and group shows. They also create artwork for event posters, handbills, logos, and merchandise for local musicians and small businesses. Maybe creates artwork with central themes of geometric patterns and surreal illustration, playing with a more loose style for abstract pieces and a more detail-oriented style for illustrative pieces.
Maybe’s process involves observation and experimentation. Learning is a hands-on experience, they study different techniques and mediums to see what expresses their ideas best. Repetition and surreal elements are meant to draw the viewer inward, the mind often finds recognizable patterns that add meaning in the piece.
